Your Rights as a Parent
Public schools are legally required to identify and evaluate students who may have disabilities that impact their education. This process, known as Child Find under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), ensures that families have the right to request evaluations in all areas of suspected disability.
Under California State Law, when a written request for an evaluation is submitted, the school is required to respond within 15 calendar days. Families can learn more about their rights and protections through the California Department of Education’s Notice of Procedural Safeguards.
You can download the a Notice of Procedural Safeguards in English and other languages to find out more about your rights as a parent on the California Department of Education's Family Involvement & Partnerships website at https://www.cde.ca.gov/sp/se/fp/.
It’s also important to understand that private or independent evaluations do not guarantee school-based services or accommodations. While schools are required to consider the results of private evaluations or Independent Educational Evaluations (IEEs), they are not legally required to adopt all findings or recommendations. Our role is to help families understand this process clearly, answer questions honestly, and support you in navigating it with confidence and realistic expectations.
We’re always happy to talk through this during your free consultation so you feel informed, supported, and prepared.
Who We Are
At Mindful LEP, we understand how heavy this journey can feel. When you’re worried about your child and trying to navigate systems that feel confusing, clinical, or rushed, it’s easy to feel lost. Our work is grounded in one simple belief: every child deserves to be understood, not just measured. We take the time to truly see your child — their strengths, challenges, personality, emotions, and learning style — so your family feels supported, not rushed through a process.
Mindful LEP serves families throughout the Bay Area and Central Valley, offering private psychoeducational evaluations, consultations, and ongoing therapeutic and intervention services. We work with families in person, meeting parents where they are and guiding them step-by-step through a process that feels thoughtful and clear. Our role isn’t to overwhelm you with data; it’s to help everything finally make sense.
