Assessments

  • Mindful LEP offers comprehensive psychoeducational evaluations designed to help families understand how a child learns, thinks, and experiences the world, not just how they perform on tests. Our evaluations look at the whole child, integrating cognitive functioning, learning and information-processing patterns, attention and behavior, emotional well-being, and relevant social, cultural, and environmental factors that may be influencing learning.

This process is thoughtful and individualized. We take the time to understand both strengths and challenges, recognizing that learning differences rarely exist in isolation. The goal isn’t simply to identify areas of difficulty, but to build a clear, balanced understanding of your child’s unique profile - one that feels accurate, respectful, and useful.

After the assessment is complete, findings are carefully analyzed and translated into clear, practical recommendations. Families receive a comprehensive written report that explains results in approachable language and includes thoughtful guidance, accommodations, and support strategies that can be used across settings, including home, school, and future planning.

Families commonly seek psychoeducational evaluations to:

    • Gain a deeper understanding of their child’s learning strengths and areas of challenge, helping clarify what support may be most helpful

    • Provide schools with clear, well-supported recommendations related to learning needs, disabilities, accommodations, or instructional modifications

    • Request an Independent Educational Evaluation (IEE) when there are concerns about a school district’s assessment or when families are seeking an additional, outside perspective

    • Support access to educational accommodations from preschool through high school, or for students pursuing accommodations in higher education

    • Assess for gifted or talented programming when required by a school or academic program

Evaluations are available for students in preschool through 12th grade, as well as for individuals seeking assessment related to college or postsecondary accommodations.

Throughout the process, our focus remains the same: helping families move from uncertainty to understanding, and from questions to clarity. That way next steps feel grounded, informed, and supportive rather than overwhelming.

Is your child bilingual or nonverbal? Mindful LEP carefully tailors the assessment process to fit your child's unique needs.

  • Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) can show up in many different ways, and it often looks very different from child to child. Some children struggle with focus and organization, others with impulse control or emotional regulation, and many experience a combination that affects learning, relationships, and confidence.

Mindful LEP’s ADHD evaluations are designed to look beyond surface behaviors. We assess attention, executive functioning, emotional regulation, and learning patterns while also considering environmental, social, and emotional factors that may be influencing a child’s experience. This whole-child approach helps ensure that what you’re seeing is understood in context, not oversimplified.

Families leave with clear insight into whether ADHD is present, how it’s impacting learning and daily functioning, and what supports may be most helpful both at school and at home. Our recommendations are practical, thoughtful, and tailored to the child, helping families move forward with clarity rather than uncertainty.

  • Dyslexia and other learning differences are often misunderstood and frequently missed. Children may be working incredibly hard while still falling behind, leading to frustration, self-doubt, or emotional stress that isn’t always obvious at first.

Mindful LEP provides comprehensive evaluations that explore reading, language processing, and underlying cognitive skills to better understand how a child processes written and spoken information. We take care to identify both areas of challenge and areas of strength, recognizing that many children with dyslexia are creative, insightful, and capable learners when supported appropriately.

Our goal is to help families and schools clearly understand what a child needs to learn successfully. Findings are translated into practical recommendations and accommodations that support reading development, classroom access, and emotional well-being, helping children feel capable and understood rather than discouraged.

  • Gifted children don’t always look the way people expect. Some thrive academically, while others feel bored, misunderstood, emotionally overwhelmed, or out of sync with peers. In some cases, giftedness can coexist with learning differences or attention challenges, making the picture even more complex.

Mindful LEP offers thoughtful giftedness evaluations that explore cognitive strengths, learning patterns, and emotional functioning to help families understand a child’s unique profile. These assessments are often used to support school placement decisions, program eligibility, or enrichment planning.

Rather than focusing solely on scores, we look at the whole child — including how they think, problem-solve, relate to others, and experience the learning environment. Families walk away with insight that helps them advocate for appropriate challenge, balance, and support, so giftedness becomes something that feels understood and nurtured rather than isolating.

Therapy & Skill Building Support

Mindful LEP offers individual and small-group therapeutic and intervention services designed to support children’s emotional, social, and developmental growth in ways that feel safe, supportive, and respectful of who they are. Our approach is relationship-based and child-centered, creating space for children to build skills at a pace that feels manageable and empowering — not pressured or pathologized.

Services may include counseling and structured support to address areas such as emotional regulation, frustration tolerance, anger expression, and oppositional or defiant behaviors. Rather than focusing on behaviors in isolation, we look at the underlying emotional, developmental, and environmental factors that may be contributing to what a child is experiencing.

In addition to therapeutic support, Mindful LEP provides targeted interventions to strengthen practical, everyday skills that directly impact learning and independence. These interventions are individualized and may focus on:

  • Social skills and peer connection, including communication, perspective-taking, and navigating friendships

  • School readiness and functional life skills, supporting confidence, independence, and success in academic and daily environments

Whether delivered individually or in small groups, our goal is to help children feel more capable, confident, and understood — building skills that support both emotional well-being and long-term success at school and beyond.

Consultation, Advocacy & Training

Mindful LEP offers thoughtful consultation and collaborative support for families, schools, and professionals navigating complex learning, emotional, and educational needs — with a focus on clarity, partnership, and proactive guidance.

For Families

Mindful LEP offers thoughtful consultation and advocacy-focused support for families navigating learning, emotional, and behavioral concerns. Our role is to help parents understand their options, communicate clearly, and move forward with confidence and integrity.

Consultation services may include parent training and guidance to support children with attention, learning, emotional, or behavioral needs, including ADHD, anxiety, mood-related concerns, oppositional behaviors, and related challenges. This work is collaborative and practical, helping families better understand their child’s needs and feel more prepared to support them at home and in school settings.

Mindful LEP also assists families in seeking and coordinating services within school districts and community agencies. This may include guidance around available supports, eligibility considerations, and how to navigate next steps in a way that feels proactive rather than reactive.

When appropriate, Mindful LEP can serve as an external provider or advocate during school meetings, supporting families as they communicate concerns, ask informed questions, and collaborate with school teams. Our approach is grounded in partnership and professionalism, helping families stay focused, calm, and constructive throughout the process.

Some examples of types of consultation and training for families include:

  • Parent training for how to better support children with ADHD, ODD, anxiety, depression, or any other kind of disorder requiring additional attention

  • Assistance seeking services in the school district or community agency

    • This includes being invited to attend meetings at your child's school as an external provider or as an advocate

  • Collaboration with other agencies or with the school district when providing direct services

For Schools & Educators

Mindful LEP partners with schools, districts, and educational professionals to provide consultation, training, and professional development that supports both student well-being and educator effectiveness. Our work is grounded in collaboration, clarity, and integrity — helping systems serve children thoughtfully, not rigidly.

Consultation and training services are designed to meet the practical, emotional, and professional needs of educators and school teams. Offerings may include mentorship and coaching for school psychologists, particularly those seeking supervision toward licensure as a Licensed Educational Psychologist (LEP) or those looking to strengthen efficiency, confidence, and effectiveness in their role.

Mindful LEP also provides professional development, trainings, and workshops for schools and districts focused on supporting students’ social, emotional, and educational needs. These sessions are practical, research-informed, and grounded in real-world school settings — supporting staff with tools they can apply immediately.

In addition, Mindful LEP offers specialized consultation and training in areas such as:

  • School threat assessment and safety planning

  • Supporting LGBTQ+ students with care, inclusion, and respect

  • Student mental health and emotional well-being

  • Educator wellness and self-care, recognizing the connection between adult support and student success

Webinars and virtual learning opportunities are also available, providing accessible professional learning for educators across settings. Our latest webinars are always posted on our social media pages.

Across all school- and educator-focused services, Mindful LEP emphasizes partnership over hierarchy and guidance over compliance. The goal is not to impose rigid systems, but to support educators in creating environments where students and the professionals who serve them can thrive.

Your Rights as a Parent

Public schools are legally required to identify and evaluate students who may have disabilities that impact their education. This process, known as Child Find under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), ensures that families have the right to request evaluations in all areas of suspected disability.

Under California State Law, when a written request for an evaluation is submitted, the school is required to respond within 15 calendar days. Families can learn more about their rights and protections through the California Department of Education’s Notice of Procedural Safeguards.

You can download the a Notice of Procedural Safeguards in English and other languages to find out more about your rights as a parent on the California Department of Education's Family Involvement & Partnerships website at https://www.cde.ca.gov/sp/se/fp/.

It’s also important to understand that private or independent evaluations do not guarantee school-based services or accommodations. While schools are required to consider the results of private evaluations or Independent Educational Evaluations (IEEs), they are not legally required to adopt all findings or recommendations. Our role is to help families understand this process clearly, answer questions honestly, and support you in navigating it with confidence and realistic expectations.

We’re always happy to talk through this during your free consultation so you feel informed, supported, and prepared.
